Pistol Classes

We offer several pistol classes at Advanced Shooting, including classes that allow you to apply for a concealed carry license (CCW, CHL), that focus on self-defense, and that show you the basics of pistol marksmanship. See our class schedule.

All of our pistol classes are taught by NRA Instructors certified to teach the Ohio concealed carry class. We've issued thousands of certificates, so we have a lot of experience.

Basic Pistol (CCW) - $70 + $5 range fee (public class)

Our most popular class is NRA Basic Pistol, the class that allows you to apply for a concealed carry license. This class is for anyone interested in obtaining a concealed handgun license, or anyone who desires pistol training or instruction on Ohio's firearms laws.

First time shooters are welcomed, and you don't need to own a gun to attend any of our classes. We teach you what you need to know and you can use one of our guns for the range portion, free of charge. In fact, many students find it better to try a few of our guns before buying one.

Our Basic Pistol class was designed using the guidelines for concealed carry training issued by the Ohio attorney general and the NRA Basic Pistol curriculum, allowing you to apply for either an Ohio or Florida carry license. It's typically a one-day course that lets you complete all the required training in one outing or a two-day course that is classroom on day one and range time on day two. It includes 10 hours of classroom and two hours of range time.

Once you have the training completed, you take the certificate you're awarded to your local sheriff's office to get your CHL. We'll go over this in class.

Basic Pistol is our most popular class, so they often sell out. Be sure to register early. See our class schedule for details. Read more about Ohio's CHL law here

Pistol Marksmanship - $40 + $5 range fee (public class)

Another popular class we offer is Pistol Marksmanship. It's great for someone who wants to learn to shoot a pistol but doesn't want to take a 12-hour course, sharpening your pistol shooting skills, or for someone who doesn't know what gun to buy yet and needs some help deciding.

If you're timid around guns or aren't sure you want a concealed carry license, this class is a great place to start (with a much lower time commitment and a lower price tag). You can learn the basics of shooting here and move onto the Basic Pistol class if you decide you want to know more about the law, want more in-depth training, or want to get your carry license.

This is your opportunity to spend time at the range with an instructor, tweaking in your ability to shoot a pistol. We'll stand over your shoulder and make sure that you can consistently hit a target and reinforce the lessons that will make you a good marksman (with practice, of course). It is also an opportunity for you to try out a few in our collection of handguns in calibers of 22 LR, 9mm Luger, 38 special, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, and 357 Magnum, to figure out what you might want to buy for yourself. Interested in buying something specific? Look through our collection and let us know what you'd like us to bring to the range.

Classes are typically done as private courses for groups or individuals, but we do hold occasional public classes. See our class schedule for when the next one is scheduled, or email us for more information.

Pistol Point Shooting - $50 + $5 range fee (public class)

This is the personal protection class for someone who doesn't want to kill a whole Saturday. Two hours at the range working on the fundamentals you learn via an online class, focusing on drawing from concealment and point shooting. You must have taken the Basic Pistol class or have equivalent experience to take this course.

Classes are typically done as private courses for groups or individuals, but we do hold occasional public classes. See our class schedule for when the next one is scheduled, or email us for more information.

Personal Protection - $70 + $5 range fee (public class)

Finally, our most advanced public pistol class is Personal Protection. This class is the step up from our Basic Pistol course. It involves more practical use of a handgun including shooting one handed, point shooting, shooting behind barriers, and barricading in the home. We suggest using the caliber you plan to carry during this class. You must have completed Basic Pistol in order to register for this class.
